The Four Types of Appointments

ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING

  • These appointments are customized to each student and their assignment with involvement and input from the student needed throughout the tutorial.

These meetings last for 25-45 minutes, according to the scheduled time. They are meant for sitting down with a tutor and discussing your assignment and addressing any concerns you may have.

The main goal is to improve your reading and writing skills, not to proofread and fix your paper for you, so please come prepared with an idea of what you need help with.

Reading Appointments and Labs

  • If you are enrolled in EIL 217 or 219, you may sign up for a weekly reading lab appointment. Your instructor will give you the referral form. If you are not enrolled in EIL 217 or 219, you may still request a reading appointment.

Reading lab appointments are held on the same day and time each week with your assigned reading tutor.

Reading appointments and labs don't count toward the two-per-week limit. You may still schedule two regular appointments during the week.

A maximum of three people may be in a group reading tutorial.

Reading appointments are grouped by your reading level.

Group Tutoring

  • Group tutorials may have up to three students.

All students must be in the same course with the same teacher and working on the same assignment.

EIL students working on tutor logs must be working on the same log number for the same instructor.

Group tutorials do count toward the two-per-week limit.

English Lab Appointments

  • ENGL 101 or 315 students may sign up for a weekly lab appointment. Your instructor will give you the referral form. Submit your completed form via email to byuh_rwc@byuh.edu, or bring your form in person to MCK 199.

Lab appointments are held on the same day and time every week with your assigned tutor. Lab appointments don't count toward the two-per-week limit. You may still make two regular appointments for this or other classes during the week.

Only ENGL 101 or 315 assignments may be worked on during these lab appointments.

Missed appointments must be made up within the allotted time frame (review with your tutor). Two missed appointments is grounds for being dropped from the lab program.

Your teacher will be notified of missed appointments and drops from the program.
